JOBO KUNDA CULTURAL TOURS Join us for our annual winter music study tour in the beautiful country of the Gambia, West Africa. Now in its fifth year of operation, JOBO KUNDA was founded to provide a bridge for those whose interest in West African music and culture demands time & study in situ. Tour guests will stay in the Kololi Inn, a bed & breakfast establishment near to the coast, with easy access to the bustling market town of SereKunda. 3 hour classes meet every morning in the nearby neighborhood of New Jeswang. All our instructors are members of the traditional musicians' "caste" known among the Mandinka people as "Jaliyaa". Optional afternoons activities include additional musical lessons; excursions to sites of local interest such as Kachikally Sacred Crocodile Pool, National Cultural Museum, the 15th century Portuguese fort across the Gambia River in Barra; shopping in the huge Serekunda market with guide/ interpreter; or relaxation/recreation at the beach. In the evenings, private performances, and night club shows in the resort area will expose guests to the variety of music cultural expressions in the Gambia today, home to Mandinka, Fula, Jolla, Wolof and other tribal groups.
